Brewer's Foundation's gore redefines charity
By: Megan Hammond
The city of Milwaukee is like a puzzle with its diverse needs. Cecelia Gore, executive director for the Brewers Community Foundation, said that her job involves putting that puzzle together.
“It’s like putting a puzzle together, and there’s many pieces that will help move along the whole,” said Gore, in reference to her job.
Gore’s vision for the Brewers Community Foundation is to assist non-profit organizations that strive to improve health, education, and recreation within the greater Milwaukee community. A lifelong Milwaukee resident, Gore understands the community and has a genuine interest in improving the lives of the people of Milwaukee.
The Brewers Foundation supports more than 200 non-profit organizations within the greater Milwaukee area. Gore manages fundraising and communication with these organizations for the Foundation. Her main priority is to integrate charitable initiatives within the greater area of Milwaukee.
Since joining the Brewers Foundation nearly six years ago, Gore has noticed a cultural shift.
“The culture of our club has shifted. People recognize that there’s value in the charitable arm.” Gore also has noticed that people of Milwaukee have a greater appreciation for the charitable arm and better understand the needs of the community.
This charitable integration stems from Gore’s work where she is constantly involved in making a difference in the community through 50/50 Raffles, interactions with the Brewers players, and her work to fund the work of non-profit organizations.
Gore realizes that the involvement of the players is instrumental to the charitable integration within the community. Each year, Gore travels to Arizona with the team for spring training for two to three weeks.
While there, Gore meets with all of the players and discusses issues in the community, charities that they can partner with, and financial contributions. Gore is proud of the fact that the team has a 100-percent contribution rate to date. Gore tries to be a positive influence on the players, especially the young ones.
In addition to the financial involvement of the players, Gore also tries to involve the players in other events such as pre-game ceremonies, school visits, and scholarship give-a-ways. She tries to plant a seed in the lives’ of others so that they understand the importance of charity.
“To be able to talk to young people about the importance of community and giving back…is very enjoyable,” Gore said proudly.
Gore’s passion and dedication to Milwaukee is unbreakable, yet she was open about the challenges she faces. “You always want to do more, and some of it is out of your control” Gore admitted. However, Gore remains optimistic.
Optimism has played a crucial role in Gore’s success. Gore is proud of the respect she has earned over the years, and she tries to translate that same respect to the people she encounters in the community. Gore’s efforts to do so have not gone unnoticed.
Co-worker and coordinator at the Brewers Community Foundation, Joan Enters, attributes Gore’s success to her personal involvement within the community
“I believe she does so well at this job because of her connections to the community and the understanding of their needs. She has become known as a leader in the community and has earned the respect of many,” Enters said.
One of Gore’s latest achievements was receiving an award for a $20,000 grant for IMPACT 2-1-1, which is an organization that offers support to those who have suffered an emergency or crisis such as fire or domestic violence. IMPACT 2-1-1 was able to revamp its entire phone and conference room, and because of their new technology, is now able to take a thousand calls per day.
The award came as a surprise to Gore and she mentioned how these types of surprise recognitions are the sweetest.
As she looks on the horizon, Gore’s goal is to continue to generate support for health, education, recreation, and basic needs for Milwaukee families with unrestricted revenue. She intends to unveil new strategies to raise more money while being less laborious.
With every project, Gore knows she is one step closer to completing the puzzle. Even though the puzzle may never be entirely complete, each step is an accomplishment for Gore.
